Finding Motivation to Write During the Winter
Winter is the time of hibernation, movie nights, lots of warm drinks, reading, blanket snuggles, and (of course) traditions galore. So, where do you fit in writing time? And how can you when the Winter Blues set in after the holidays in January/February?
It isn’t easy, especially when you have a regular 9-5 job. Some days feel like you’re heading to work when the sun is coming up and leaving work when it’s horribly dark. It’s much easier to stay in bed and handle all adulting responsibilities another day… or another season. Well, friends, there is writing to be done during the coldest months of the year and this is how to stay motivated.
Find a Buddy
Do you know someone who is trying to write a novel, short story, etc? Partner up with them and go on writing dates! Keep track of each other’s progress to stay motivated and on top of your writing goals.
Treat Yo Self
Yes, this is a Parks and Rec reference (I have no shame). Getting back to what matters… it’s so cold outside that you have every reason to stay inside and keep warm. So, go make that hot chocolate with mini marshmallows (or coffee or tea or mulled wine), grab that cozy blanket, and nestle in with your writing. Act as if this writing time isn’t a job, but a warm retreat from the blizzard outside your door.
Embrace Your Hermit Nature
You have the best reason not to go out. Oh, there’s a party? I have a deadline. There’s a dinner? I have to finish this chapter. You need me to walk your dogs when it feels like minus 30…? Well, if you’re a dog lover like me, this one isn’t easy to pass up. But you catch my drift. Embrace your hermit nature during the winter season and utilize your writing as an excuse to keep writing.
Natural Light
I’ve discussed this in my article, How To Create The Ultimate Writing Space, but it’s an important one. To keep up your writing motivation, position yourself by natural light to increase your body’s production of Vitamin D. The sun is your friend. It can leave you feeling happier, which allows you to get more work done with better focus.
In The End…
There are a million reasons why writing during the winter season is ideal. Once you start, it’s easy to keep going. It’s all about beating back that urge to procrastinate… and the darkness that takes over during this season, so you can feel good about doing what you love!
